So, I made this pie graph.
I based the information represented here on number of pages. Out of all the Act 6 pages, I identified which ones were “shippy” and which ones were not. Flashes were counted as being 4 pages. The pages from here to here were not included in the count at all, due to the fact that when someone mentions “shipping drama” in Act 6, they are referring only to the Alpha Kids.
If the page included a mere mention of romance, I counted it as a shippy page. Abiding by this rule, I counted the pages where UU tells Dirk her opinion of human romance, despite those pages not exactly dealing with the romantic drama of the Alpha kids. Two of the pages are counted simply because of Jake’s quadrant-ish symbol regarding the mysterious Scorpio troll. I did not count pages simply discussing Jake’s affection of cerulean babes or his movie posters because that seemed like stretching it a bit. You can view the work that I did here.
Out of 403 pages, 22 mention romance. Thus, “shippy” pages, as I defined them, account for, roughly, about 5% of Act 6. The majority of these pages were uploaded after the intermission, particularly in recent updates. The “shipping drama” as we know it now began on this page, in which the autoresponder tells Roxy of Dirk’s impending “romantic overture toward Jake”. Before this, the character that tended to dwell the most on romantic matters (really, the only character that roused discussion of romantic matters at all- not even UU brought them up before the aforementioned page) was Roxy.
This is AWESOME. I wish more of the people who are bitching about ships would see this. It gets on my nerves to see people complaining over and over again about ships.
However, if we were to do a pie chart of tumblr posts relating to the alpha kids and whether they were shippy or not, then the data would probably be reversed with 95% of posts being shippy and 5% of posts being not. The fandom is a little obsessed with shipping, but when has it not been obsessed with shipping? If you are complaining about the vapid shipping in the Homestuck fandom, then you are in the wrong fandom, friend.
If you have a problem with shipping then you shouldn’t really induct yourself into ANY fandom really…
At least not from my experience.
PRAISE THE LORD this post is perfect thank you
They’re talking about their everyday lives though. They’re a bunch of 15-16 year old kids in the middle of drama. DUH A FUCK TON OF THEIR TIME IS GONNA BE TALKING ABOUT RELATIONSHIP DRAMA.
Jesus anytime I see people complain that there’s “too much shipping in the comic” and then they say it’s not relevant I just want to hit them upside the head. Shipping and relationships are relevant. The entire comic is about people’s interactions with one another. Relationships are a huge part of the entire comic.
Sorry if you don’t like it, but that doesn’t make it crap.
fandom should start appreciating...story rather than trying
THANK YOU. God forbid Hussie shakes things up and explores character relationships for once. D: I really hope this gets...
