Disney’s Mulan Deleted Scene: Reflection
In my opinion, deleting this scene from “Reflection” was a terrible mistake. The song is beautiful, don’t get me wrong, but this added part takes a somewhat disparing song and makes being different empowering and strong.
WHY WASN’T THIS HERE
I…understand why this wasn’t here. The movie starts with Mulan facing, hopelessly, the social structures of China. She is very well aware of the fact that she will probably never break free of them. She wants to, but at the same time, she has been beaten down by them to an almost complacent point. The movie isn’t just about her saving China and defeating the Huns, it’s about saving herself and defeating her mental mindset that she can’t do it. Overcoming that is a huge plot point of the entire movie. Having this right in beginning takes that away, because it shows that she already has defeated that mindset. At this point in the movie, Mulan is not supposed to be empowered. Reflection is a song and scene meant to show how broken she really is from the weight put on her. Which is why this got cut.
